The city of Fargo is warning people in the area that its water had higher levels of the chemical bromate than EPA standards.
The Environmental Protection Agency says water should have an average of 0.010 milligrams per liter of bromate. Fargo water had 0.088 milligrams per liter when a sample was taken in December 2017.
The city says the issue with the chemical has since been resolved and new processes are put in place to keep water safe for use.
Health officials say some people exposed to high levels of bromate over many years may have an increased risk of cancer.
However, a doctor with Fargo Cass Public Health says there is no risk to the community from the short time that bromate levels were over the EPA limit.
